The IC-scan system represents a practical and cost effective solution to the production issues associated with the tracking and control of MSDs in a PCB assembly plant. The system is using RF tags, which are temporarily attached to the trays and reels containing MSDs. The tags contain a programmable memory chip that stores all the information relative to the components and the associated expiration date and time. They can be read and updated by placing them in close proximity with an antenna.

In order to track the movement of material through different operations and environments (placement machine, dry cabinet, dry bag, bake oven) the trays and reels are simply scanned during each load/unload operation. The application software will provide real-time status and physical location of all MSDs and it will apply all the rules of the IPC/JEDEC standard to automatically update the remaining floor life, thereby reducing unnecessary bake cycles.

Warnings and alarms are generated such that operators can take preventive actions and eliminate the risk of assembling expired components.
